Interstate 25 is one of Colorado’s busiest corridors, carrying hundreds of thousands of motorists through the Denver metro area each day. But in recent years, daily drives have started to feel more dangerous, including along the interstate’s stretch of roadway through Lone Tree between RidgeGate Parkway and County Line Road. With annual steady crashes and fatalities on the rise, many say it’s becoming increasingly unsafe, as drivers push well beyond safe speeds and weave in and out of traffic.
“The Lone Tree Police Department has made it a priority to address aggressive driving along the I-25 corridor, where we continue to see concerning numbers of crashes, fatalities and dangerous driving behavior,” said Chief of Police Kirk Wilson. “But we can’t do it alone – our residents, businesses and visitors all rely on I-25, and we’re asking everyone to do their part to drive safely and help reduce those risks.”
Targeted Enforcement on I-25
Lone Tree Police monitor and enforce traffic every day. Officers regularly monitor speeds, respond to complaints and address violations throughout the City. However, coordinated operations with other police agencies allow multiple agencies to focus resources at the same time, increasing visibility and impact, targeting high-risk driving behaviors along the
I-25 corridor.
During coordinated police traffic enforcement operations along I-25 in February, March and April of 2026, Lone Tree officers conducted 92 traffic stops, resulting in 69 citations and 12 warnings. Of those citations, 32 were for speeding, along with violations for unsafe lane changes, failure to follow Colorado’s Move Over Law, and unregistered vehicle/suspended licenses. During both recent operations, officers recorded speeds as high as 95 miles per hour in a posted 65 mph zone.
An Alarming Trend of Statistics
Beyond these targeted enforcement efforts, annual data reveals a story that is hard to ignore. Traffic accidents along I-25 have risen sharply in recent years, climbing from 520 in 2020 to a peak of 939 in 2025. The steady increase suggests more than just heavier traffic, it points to a growing prevalence of risky driving behaviors.
DUI incidents show an especially concerning trend. After remaining relatively low through 2023, cases surged dramatically in 2024 and stayed elevated in 2025. This rise indicates a greater presence of impaired drivers, often linked to aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, weaving through traffic, and slower reaction times.
Fatal crashes, though smaller in number, highlight the most serious consequences. Annual fatalities reached their highest level in 2025, highlighting the human cost of unsafe driving. Even modest increases in these figures represent lives lost and families forever affected.
Taken together, the data paints a clear picture: I-25 is becoming more hazardous not simply because of increased traffic volume, but because of how drivers are behaving behind the wheel. The combination of rising crashes, increased DUI activity, and higher fatality rates reinforces the urgent need to address aggressive and impaired driving along this critical corridor.
Balancing Safety and Enforcement on I-25
Limited traffic stops by police officers along I-25 are often a matter of safety. The I-25 corridor presents unique challenges – narrow shoulders, heavy traffic and high speeds that can make the police pulling a vehicle over especially dangerous. In many cases, stopping along the highway puts not only officers and drivers at risk, but also passing motorists. When possible, officers look for safer locations off the interstate to initiate a traffic stop. In addition, staffing is also a factor. Like many agencies, Lone Tree Police must balance traffic enforcement with calls for service and ongoing community policing efforts across the City.
A Reminder About Speed Limits
The posted speed limit along the stretch of I-25 is 65 mph, yet officers routinely encounter drivers traveling 20 miles per hour or more above that limit. At higher speeds, stopping distances increase, reaction time shrinks and crashes become far more severe.
Drivers can help lower the risk by planning ahead and allowing extra travel time, using cruise control to maintain a steady speed, keeping a safe following distance and avoiding aggressive behaviors like weaving or rapid lane changes. Patience, especially in heavy traffic, goes a long way.
