Elections give our community a voice in shaping the future of our community, region, state and country. On this page, you’ll find information about upcoming elections, how to register to vote, where to vote, and important dates and deadlines. Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to the City, we encourage you to stay informed and take part in the democratic process.
Primary and General Elections
The City of Lone Tree does not run any state or national primary or general elections. Election administration is done by Douglas County. Find information on elections, ballots, and more at www.douglasco.gov/elections/.
Previous City Elections
May 5, 2026 City Council Election
Lone Tree’s next municipal election is scheduled for May 5, 2026. Registered electors will vote to fill two seats on the Lone Tree City Council. Municipal elections in Lone Tree are nonpartisan, meaning candidates run based on their experience, qualifications, and priorities for the community and not political party affiliation. City Councilmembers are responsible for setting policy, approving the City budget, establishing strategic priorities, and helping guide the future of our community.
Two district seats will be open this election:
- District 1: One seat (currently held by Jay Carpenter)
- District 2: One seat (currently held by Mike Anderson who is term limited)
To qualify as a candidate for City Council, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be a registered elector in Lone Tree
- Have lived in your district for at least one year before Election Day
- Be 25 years of age or older by Election Day
- Have not been convicted of a felony

Why the City Council Matters
Serving on City Council requires dedication, time, and energy. Councilmembers help shape policies that affect nearly every part of community life including public safety, transportation, development, parks, and City services. This work involves listening to residents and businesses, learning about issues, and collaborating with City staff, regional partners, and other elected officials.
Much of the effort happens before a Council meeting: reviewing reports, researching topics, and connecting with the community to make informed decisions that reflect Lone Tree’s values. Councilmembers also appoint residents to boards and commissions, represent the City at events, and participate in regional and state groups to ensure Lone Tree’s voice is heard on important issues. For anyone who cares deeply about Lone Tree and wants to help steer its path forward, it’s a rewarding way to serve.

Voter Registration
Colorado permits online voter registration with a Colorado driver’s license or ID card. You can register to vote if you will be 18 years old by Election Day, are a citizen of the United States, and have lived in Colorado at least 22 days prior to Election Day.
Municipal Elections
Based on the City’s Charter, regular City elections are held in May or November, based on whether the election is coordinated with Douglas County. Regular municipal elections are nonpartisan. Special elections can be scheduled any time of the year.
Most regular municipal elections are coordinated with Douglas County to combine local issues and races with county, state and federal elections and ballots. The Douglas County Clerk is responsible for administering the issuance, collection, and counting of ballots for these elections.
