Automatic License Plate Readers
Lone Tree has long been recognized as a safe community, where residents and businesses enjoy a high quality of life. To further enhance the safety of residential and business areas by staying ahead of criminals passing through the City, the Police Department is embracing cutting-edge technology known as Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR) and are already seeing significant results.
According to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, up to 70% of crimes involve a vehicle, and 60% of stolen vehicles are linked to criminal activity. Advanced surveillance systems such as ALPR play a critical role in reducing these statistics by improving monitoring and tracking capabilities for law enforcement.
How They Work
Equipped with high-definition license plate readers and real-time data processing analyzing vehicle movements, each ALPR camera sends a real-time alert to law enforcement when a stolen car or known wanted suspect from a state or national crime database is detected. They also send alerts if a vehicle is associated with a missing person in an Amber or Silver Alert is detected.
ALPRs capture license plates and vehicle characteristics, not people or faces. Each search requires a justification, and the data is never sold or shared with third parties. The cameras are used to solve and reduce crime and are not intended for minor traffic or parking violations.
Lone Tree's Success
The Lone Tree Police Department has noted several key cases where ALPRs were instrumental in solving each case, providing critical evidence that led to the successful apprehension of suspects. ALPRs are actively aiding officers in police work with daily arrests, enhancing the department’s ability to proactively address and solve incidents throughout the city.
Currently, 19 ALPRs are installed in various locations around Park Meadows Retail Resort, as well as several neighborhoods throughout the City (these cameras were installed by their homeowners’ associations). Each camera’s effectiveness will be evaluated annually to ensure it supports the department’s overall goals of enhancing
community safety.
ALPRs are in use in more than 5,000 communities across the country, and the company works with over 3,000 police departments. According to Flock Safety, the Flock Safety Cameras help law enforcement solve 10% of reported crime in the U.S. and communities using Flock Safety Cameras have reported crime reductions of up to 70%.
