Did you know the City of Lone Tree has an Employee Sustainability Committee? Our mission is to intentionally promote a sustainable Lone tree community that serves the City’s current and future needs through a collaborative and innovative approach to environmental, social, and economic well-being. Sustainability is evident in how we grow, how we do business and the culture of the community.

As part of our efforts, we are highlighting organizations that are dedicated to instituting sustainable practices. We know many organizations in Lone Tree are doing incredible work, and we want to highlight their efforts by featuring them as a monthly Sustainability Champion throughout the City’s website, newsletter, social media, and more.

This month’s Sustainability Champion is the Lone Tree Sustainability Team. The Lone Tree Sustainability Team was started in January 2020 by Lone Tree couple Steve and Carol Sorensen. The Sorensen’s saw an opportunity to create a community network of residents, businesses, and others who care about Lone Tree.

The Sustainability Team has 3 objectives: 1. Education, 2. Action, and 3. Legacy. Over the last 2 years, the Sustainability Team has participated in a number of ways, including:

• Holding quarterly trash pickup events. These events have been attended by more than 150 adults and kids, collecting trash across the City. Supporters of these events include Vibe Foods, Lone Tree Composting, Xcel Energy, and Waste Connections.
• Partnered with the City and Xcel Energy in developing a community energy plan, and provided input into the City’s zoning codes and design guidelines as it relates to sustainability
• Provided educational sessions on using solar, composting, and recycling

A dedicated group of individuals has supported every event, including Gary and Susan Mendenhall and Greg and Nancee Sprigg from Lone Tree, and Brian O’Malley, not of Lone Tree. Lone Tree City Council Member Jay Carpenter was a founding member of the Team, and his family routinely support the activities as well.

The next event is on March 5th at 10:00 at Prairie Sky Park. Anyone is welcome to join the events or sign up to receive periodic communications from the Team at their website. RSVP for the March event is encouraged, but not required. To learn more about the Lone Tree Sustainability Team, click here.

If you know of a business, HOA, or even a citizen making a difference in our community through environmentally sustainable practices, nominate them to be our next Sustainability Champion by filling out this form! We’d love to highlight their great work.
