Porch Pirates

Last year, millions of packages were delivered around the state, as more and more people transition to on-line shopping.  But with this new ease of shopping and home delivery comes opportunity for package thieves, also known as Porch Pirates.

According to a recent Channel 7 news report, the Denver metro area ranked number one in the nation for package thefts, with over 1,000 packages stolen in 2021.  As we approach the Holiday season, the Lone Tree Police Department wants to remind you to be on the lookout for package theft.

Check out these crime prevention tips to keep the grinch away this season:

  • Have your package(s) delivered to your work.
  • Have your package(s) delivered to the home of a relative or a neighbor who will be home to collect it when it is delivered.
  • Have your package(s) held at the Post Office for pickup.
  • Take advantage of the “Ship to Store” option that many stores offer.
  • Use the “Amazon Key” program that delivers package(s) to your garage or vehicle trunk.
  • Take advantage of the delivery lockers that are available at several retail establishments.
  • Ask you carrier to place the package(s) in an area out of plain view of the street and sidewalk.
  • Install a package lockbox.

Are you a victim of package theft?

Unfortunately, the installation of a security camera is not enough to secure your packages and deter thieves, so please takes extra steps this season to prevent package theft.  If you are the unlucky person who is victimized by a porch pirate, please report the theft to the Lone Tree Police Department immediately.
