There are times when dialing 9-1-1 and speaking to an operator could put an individual in more danger. When you are unable to dial 9-1-1, you can text 9-1-1 for help.
However, please note that while text-to-9-1-1 is currently available in Lone Tree and Parker, it’s not available everywhere. If you text 9-1-1 in an area that does not receive text message, you will get a message indicating that texting 9-1-1 is not available and that you should make a voice call. Therefore, calling 9-1-1 is the best way to get information to dispatchers quickly in an emergency. But if you can’t call, text.
To Text 9-1-1,
- Open a new text message.
- Place 911 in the recipient field.
- Your first message should be brief and include location and nature of the emergency.
- Be prepared to answer questions and follow instructions from the 9-1-1 call taker that will text back.
- Text in plain language. Do not use slang, abbreviations, emojis, pictures or video.
- Once you have initiated a text-to-911 conversation, do not delete the messages or turn off your device until the call taker tells you it is okay to do so.
You do not need to download an app for this. 9-1-1 call takers can only text if a user calls or texts first.
